Frequently Asked Questions
What moisture content should firewood be?
Firewood should have a moisture content of less than 20%. This classifies it as ‘ready to burn’. In the UK, retailers are only allowed to sell firewood that has been dried to this moisture volume to reduce pollution and smoke, as well as reduce the risk of a chimney fire.
How do you store firewood outdoors?
Firewood that is stored outdoors should be raised off the ground on a rack or pellet, bark side facing up. It should be kept dry either by sitting under secure cover or being stored in a ventilated log store. Logs that are not properly ventilated are vulnerable to mould so avoid wrapping in plastic or leaving in an airtight container.
How to start a fire with firewood?
- Remove soot and debris from the area.Â
- Place scrunched up paper in your secure fireplace, log burner, or fire pit.Â
- On top of this, stack kindling in a triangular (teepee) shape.
- Place a couple of small logs on either side of the kindling.Â
- Light the paper carefully with a long match or lighter.Â
- As the logs start to burn, carefully layer a few more logs on top.
What fuel is best for inside burners?
Kiln dried hardwood is the best fuel for log burners as it is Ready to Burn and burns hotter for longer. Read our full guide to the best firewood for log burners to choose the right logs every time.
Is firewood carbon neutral?
Firewood can be carbon neutral if it’s sourced sustainably from woodland close to where it is dried and stored, and is FCS certified.
What is Ready to Burn firewood?
Ready to Burn firewood is any firewood that has been dried to contain less than 20% moisture. This makes it safer and more sustainable
